Kids and Their Tall Tales

So, there is a new girl in the hood who is quite the storyteller, or at least I hope she is telling stories. She is 6 and in kindergarten or maybe she's not, but that is what she told me. She looks like Peyton's age, but talks and acts like Eliza's age, so I guess she is just tall.  Apparently, she moved in yesterday or today. She wasn't sure.
The girls had been scootering outside with our neighbor, Olivia, when she joined in. She had her own scooter and had no idea how to ride it, but I am sure she will catch on.  The girls burst in the apt and introduced her to me.  Kai was taking a nap, so I shooed them out and followed behind. The girl, we'll call B, proceeded to tell me she has a dog like Cali. Here is how the conversation went:

B: I have a dog like that.
me: Oh really, you have a black Newfoundland?
B: Ummmm no it is a black............lab.
me: Great.
Peyton: We used to have a black, but he lives with Granny and he has one eye.
B: I think my dog actually died yesterday.
me: WHAT??? I am so sorry.
Peyton: That is so sad :(
B: My dad was walking the dog and they got eaten by an alligator.
Peyton: What!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (completely shocked and upset)
me: That is so tragic. Did that really happen?
B: Yeah........my dad doesn't work out, so that is why it happened. He is not strong.
Peyton: Well, my dad does workout, so that won't happen to him.

I then told the girls to go finish playing because it was nearly time for gymnastics. I immediately went onto the computer to see if this story was true. I Googled and Googled.  You would think if a man and his best friend were attacked and eaten by an alligator while on a walk it would make the news.
I found nothing.
The next thing I knew Eliza flies in saying Ms Marie needs me. I hurry out to see what has happened and she tells me Peyton frantically tried to stop her from walking her dog by the lake because she might get eaten. That is when B tells her the story. Now, I am pissed, because this 6 year is scaring the shit out of Peyton. My sweet Peyton who is afraid to be in a room alone, go to the bathroom alone, the dark, any weird noise, and the list goes on. Marie is baffled and doesn't know what to say except, "B, I really don't think that happened."
The kids started scootering again and B falls. Great, now maybe she'll go home. Peyton brings her to me and she asks for an ice pack. I say, " go home and tell your mom and ask her for an icepack." Aren't I nice? Peyton then says, " she doesn't have a mom, only a grandma and she is in a wheelchair and can't do anything like reach the freezer."Are you kidding me? I tell Peyton and Olivia to walk her home because it was time for gymnastics. When Peyton came back she told me a grandma aged lady opened the door and she was standing on two human legs. It is my mission to get to the bottom of this by the end of the week.
Should this child be telling the truth, then I am truly sorry for her loss. I called Tina and had to get her take on this and I like her theory. Dad  moved out and took the dog, so mom tells the child they got eaten by an alligator because she was so pissed.
What do you think?

  1. oh, i still can't believe that little liar. but i was a liar when i was younger, too. i can't be too upset about it. i used to tell everyone my house was haunted, i was related to Demi Moore and Roger Moore, and that i owned a chimp. i think i did it to deal with family problems. this lil' girl is probably having troubles at home and telling tales to avoid the truth. i just hope peyton doesn't take everything too literally. xxo.
